Permit me to re write the equation as:

v² = u² + 2ad            Where v = vf,  and vi = u

v² -2ad = u²

u² =  v² -2ad        Take square root of both sides

√u² = √(v² -2ad)

 u = √(v² -2ad)

 Vi = √(Vf² -2ad)
