The discovery of oil (and natural gas along side it) allowed the countries from the Middle East to prosper because their income skyrocketed. Some countries did not used this at its best, but some like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain,Qatar, Kuwait, made significant leaps forward and became rich countries, and countries that are very important on the global political map.
