The answer is the 13th Amendment also known as the Emancipation Proclamation that abolished slavery. This led to the liberation of slaves in the South.  Many escaped while others joined the Union who invaded the Southern states.  It was passed after the Union forces fought in the Battle of Antietam and Lincoln used that to pass the Emancipation Proclamation.
