How did slavery impact the economy of the Roman Empire

Slavery was great for the Roman Empire because it allowed people to show their social status by how many slaves they owned, and it allowed the slaves to do the work that nobody wanted to do which in turn let other people start working on things that they enjoyed like poetry, language, books.
