It was mainly to get rich and steal lots of treasure, as well as advancing their own profiles. this applies to the nobility who led the Crusades but they told the foot soldiers who were going to die to help the rich obtain their aims, that it was all to glorify God and kick the Muslims out of the Holy Land.
