Simple past is also called “preterite”. This type of grammar helps explain actions that have already happened.

Explanation:

Past tense words usually end in “ed” such as “jumped”, “helped”, or “watched”. But there are exceptions such as “run” and “swim”. Run and swim are present tense and to make them past tense you change the vowel to an A. So run becomes “ran” and swim becomes “swam”. I hope I helped a little.
