There are different patterns for different sonnets. For a Petrarchan or Italian sonnet, the rhythm pattern is ABBAABBA CDECDE. For a Shakespearean or English sonnet the rhythm pattern is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. I think there is also a Spenserian sonnet which has a pattern of ABAB BCBC CDCD EE.
