An independent clause is a complete sentence that expresses a complete thought.

A dependent clause is not a complete sentence that does not express a complete thought.

Independent clauses can stand on their own

ex- She went inside the car.

Dependent clauses cannot stand on their own and rely on an independent clause

ex- She went inside the car after the party was over.
