Why did the writers want the Separation of Powers principle incorporated into the U.S. Constitution?

The Separation of power was devised by the framers in order to prevent the majority from ruling with an iron fist. This protects the other sides from the possible oppressive majority and they shied away from giving any branch of their new government too much power. Because with too much power there is always a chance for someone who doesn't have a minority's best interests in mind to abuse that power.
