The word 'indirect' and 'direct' within a democratic system represent the role that the people take in the creation of legislation.
In direct democracy, the people choose the type of legislation that they want. In indirect democracy, people can only choose their leaders and trusted these leaders to create legislation that benefit them, and this is the one that was used by the roman.
