Why are heating vents usually placed on the floor of a home?

Because in heat rises faster on the floor than on the ceiling or side of a wall.

Heating vents are usually placed on the floor because heat rises. If they weren't on the ground or near it then the house would not stay warm because all of the heat traveled up and out of the room!
