The social structure of Haiti did not provide any opportunities for the local to advance.

Unlike in north America colonies, the French colony treated every local in Haiti as slaves rather than trade workers. (In north America, small fraction of the colonies at least have some opportunity to gain wealth by following the British' orders)

As a result, resentment started to built up among the locals and eventually led to one of the most violent yet successful slave revolts in the world's history.
