The solution to this system of equations is x = 5 and y = 2.

Given:

5x + 2y = 29 and  x + 4y = 13.

on solving eq 1 - 5*eq 2:

5x + 2y - 5(x+4y) = 29  - 13*5

5x + 2y - 5x - 20y = 29 - 65

2y - 20 y = 29 - 65

-18y = -36

18y = 36

divide by 18 on both sides

18y/18 = 36/18

y = 36/18

y = 2

substitute y = 2

5x+2y =  29

5x + 2*2 = 29

5x + 4 = 29

5x = 29-4

5x = 25

divide by 5 on both sides

x = 25/5

x = 5
