Why are some electromagnetic waves harmful to you but others are not?

some electromagnetic waves have a long wavelength (radio and microwaves) but other have a smaller wavelength (xrays and gamma rays) and therefore it can penetrate your skin and cells and destroy/mutate then which can cause cancer.
