The geography is such that it protects them from outside influence. It is on an island surrounded by rocks that cannot be reached and it protects them both from winds, and from those who would arrive by ships. If you're from there you know how to get there but outsiders don't know. There was an isthmus that connected it to the land but it was destroyed on purpose. It developed in isolation and without foreign interference.
