One financial problem centered around the fact that the Confederation Congress lacked the ability to pass laws to collect tariffs. Also, they started to print paper money, but since there wasn't a store of silver or gold to back it up, the money had no real value. A third issue that doomed the economy was the large debt that had been incurred during the war.
