I'd think it would be the gasses combined with the heat waves and radiation from the sun that would make it hot. Pardon me if I'm wrong

The other ans is good...so adding a fun fact here for ur points:Venus is hotter than Mercury even though Mercury is closer to the sun because it has a much thicker atmosphere. The atmosphere, a gaseous layer surrounding the planet, is like a blanket. It heats Venus through the greenhouse effect.
