The first time Cairo, the capital of today's Egypt and a very important cultural and religious centre of the ancient world as well, fell under Muslim control was in the year 641. It was conquered by the forces of 'Amr ibn al-'As, a general who lived in the same times as the muslim prophet Muhammad.
