Because he was an important figure in the spread of Islam throughout Africa and was one of the main people in the establishment of golden age of Timbuktu when it became one of the capitals of science and education in the world. Many famous Muslim scholars came from Timbuktu or went there to study because of how important the place was thanks to Askia the Great.
